You can’t find it in tourist guides: tourists do not know the red lake in the bauxite quarry near Otranto, Lecce in Salento, in Apulia region in Italy. It’s an hidden unusual place, indeed!

Ok, you know that bauxite is a dark red sedimentary rock from which aluminum is obtained: then it is called “lake of bauxite” but it’s not a lake with bauxite but because it was formed in a bauxite quarry. The exploitation of the quarry took place from 1940 to 1976, then it was abandoned. The infiltration of water from one of the aquifers created a pond of a deep emerald green color. Unfortunately the lake is not suitable for swimming. Believe me: when you taste powder in your mouth in a very hot summer afternoon, it’s a real pity.

The road is unpaved but you will be able to easily travel it with any car you have. The red powder is the real problem: get ready to stain all your clothes! I made a mess with my clothes!

I really like this shot of the roofs of Giovinazzo, typical Apulian town, in Italy. According to legends, Perseo founded the original Jovis Natio in Apulia.

I remember it was a very pleasant summer evening and I was relaxing on the terrace of a tasty restaurant (to be honest I found only tasty restaurants in Apulia!), when the sunset rewarded me with these stunning colors. I must take it!
