This is the story of a photograph that almost didn’t happen – captured at that precise moment when exhaustion meets magic, when a photographer’s depleted body encounters a scene too perfect to ignore.

That February evening, I was devastated. My body screamed for rest, my mind foggy from hours of shooting. The car was still far away, the path ahead tortuous through Venice’s maze-like streets. Then I turned a corner, and there it was – a scene straight from a Dashiell Hammett novel, noir and ethereal simultaneously.

The canal stretched before me like a liquid mirror, its surface so still it seemed to hold its breath. The lamplight – those iconic Venetian street lamps that replaced the gas lights of the 19th century – cast golden pools on the water, creating a theatrical atmosphere that black and white photography was born to capture.

The Hidden Venice: What This Photograph Reveals

This isn’t the Venice of postcards. This is one of the city’s 150 minor canals – the rii – where real Venetian life unfolds. Here, boats covered with tarps serve as the “parked cars” of residents. Logging to my personal computer I found out a nice surprice: Windows people chose my photo of Verucchio to be the Windows Spotlight Screen Lock image for this beginning of 2022! I’m very pleased! Thank you!

What a nice way to begin the 2022! I really love this shot because Verucchio is a very nice medieval village in Romagna, near Rimini, but I am personally and sentimentally very bond to this extraordinary town too: my father was born here on the 15th of November in the far 1936 and spent here the first 12 years of his life. In 2020 he passed away and I miss him every day.

Bologna is not a top tourist destination like Rome, Venice or Florence. It’s a pity because it’s a very interesting city. Because of the architectural beauties, churches and porticoes in particular, and, again, the amazing culinary tradition.

The panorama of Bologna is astonishing: the skyline with the medieval towers is unforgettable. Furthermore now there are few medieval towers: the most famous are the two leaning ones, Asinelli and Garisenda, a symbol of Bologna. In the Middle Ages the towers were about one hundred! Imagine a Medieval Manhattan!

I really like this shot of the roofs of Giovinazzo, typical Apulian town, in Italy. According to legends, Perseo founded the original Jovis Natio in Apulia.

I remember it was a very pleasant summer evening and I was relaxing on the terrace of a tasty restaurant (to be honest I found only tasty restaurants in Apulia!), when the sunset rewarded me with these stunning colors. I must take it!
